Franklin Armory KILLS the NFA SBR Rule with Antithesis

The big news in the gun industry this week is how Franklin Armory beat the ATF by using their own word games against them.  I’m interested to see how this will affect future SBR regulations.  For more info on the subject, read The ATF shot itself in the foot with Franklin Armory’s new gun

THE ANYWHERE DEFENSE: IMPACT WEAPON TACTICS

Steve Tarani offers some impact weapon advice.  I taught a private impact weapons (canes and flashlights) last weekend.  The group that brought me in really enjoyed the material.  Unfortunately, most folks don’t think smashing people with sticks is nearly as fun as shooting and my impact weapons classes are seldom requested.

Seasonings Greeting: Testing Rock Salt Shotgun Shells

It was once a fairly well-known practice to load shotguns with rock salt as a primitive version of “less lethal” ammunition.  It’s never been a good idea to do this, but I occasionally hear of it.  Here is a ballistic gelatin test of a rock salt round.  More than an inch of penetration hardly makes this one “less lethal.”

If you aren’t getting a lot of natural sun exposure, you should probably check your vitamin D levels.

Wheelgun 101: Proper Maintenance of Your Smith & Wesson Revolver

As revolvers are starting to become more popular again, this article might be useful for you.  While the knowledge it contains is excellent, you should rarely, if ever, need to strip your revolver down this far.

While we are on the topic of revolvers, you might enjoy this history lesson.  You might also appreciate one man’s quest for My Holy Grail Revolver–the S&W Registered Magnum.

I’d love to have a registered magnum like Nick found.  Until then, I adore my shooter-grade 3.5″ Pre-Model 27 S&W N-frame.  I’ll probably be packing it when I teach at Gunsite’s Revolver Roundup.

When traveling in dangerous areas, I think it’s useful to carry some hidden escape tools.  This article covers some of the better options on the market.  I have all of the tools recommended and carry them regularly in hazardous situations.

UPDATED: How mass killers pick out venues where their victims are sitting ducks

This is good information.  I will, however, point out that although the “Batman” movie theater shooter chose a venue where CCW was prohibited, we don’t have any solid evidence that was why he chose that particular theater as a target.  I’ve read his notes and manifesto describing every aspect of how and why he chose his target.  He never mentioned the fact that the theater prohibited CCW in his very detailed attack plans.

Online subcultures schools need to understand.

All of this seems confusing and insane to me. I have zero interest in understanding these cultures. I want to ignore it all. Unfortunately 4/4 of our last school shooters embraced these communities. I force myself to better understand things, even if it makes no sense to me.  Want an even deeper dive?  Read Meme culture, Groypers, school shooters, and ‘Anomie Extremism’.

Why Improvised Tourniquets Don’t Work (But Why You Should Still Learn How)

I’m convinced that most of the people “saved” by improvised tourniquets probably didn’t need a tourniquet in the first place.  For some formal data, check out my Tourniquet Research Compendium.

The Failure of the Defensive Mindset

“When is the right time for an offensive strategy? Only you can answer that for yourself. However, first you must truly have a proactive mindset to put an offensive strategy in motion. If, like so many others, you have bought into the defense is good/offense is bad mentality, your doom and defeat are imminent.”

Taking The Mystery Out Of Astigmatism

An eye doctor writes about the effect astigmatism will have on your shooting.  On the range, the biggest complaints I gets from students with great astigmatism is that their red dot optic is very “fuzzy” or has tracers.  If shooting a rifle, flip up your co-witnessed backup iron sights.  Looking through both sights at the same time sharpens the dot in about 75% of my students.
